“Not all those who wander are lost” ~ J.R.R. Tolkien

A vacation is just a series of events, not a story in and of itself. Some of these occurrences will be fascinating while others will be uninteresting you arrived back at the airport on time.

What makes an event exciting, though, is dependent on the tale you wish to tell. Returning to the airport on time could be interesting, but only if you could tell a narrative about how everything went wrong in Tanzania.

As a writer, your first task is to choose the story you want to tell and the events that will make up that story, as well as to ensure that all of those events are fascinating or valuable to the reader.
